Kansas City History

Kansas City Landmarks Commission, 816-513-2902. Local source for city-wide collection of home photographs from the 1940's.  Please note that as of 1/18/11, photographs can be viewed but not purchased, due to non-functional duplicating equipment.  A waiting list is available for those wishing photographs.

The Jackson County Historical Society, 816-461-1897.  The JCHS has large archives and will research the history of Jackson county homes for a nominal fee.  The Society also gives local presentations on how to research the history of your home.

Innovative Design and Renovation, 2 West 52nd Street, Kansas City, MO, 64112.  816-531-2221.  Darryl W. Hawkins, AIA, CBO, NCARB, SAME, specializes in historic, entertainment, retail and commercial architectural design.  Darryl has a number of projects, both completed and under construction, throughout the Kansas City area, from the Plaza to the Crossroads to Brookside and beyond.  Check out one of his projects in the "Best Homes of 2006" issue of Kansas City Homes and Gardens.

Foundation Architectural Reclamation, 1221 Union Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri, 64101.  816-283-8990.  Located in Kansas City's historic West Bottoms, Foundation brings architectural treasures, salvaged building materials, and reuse services to homeowners who are interested in preserving and adding architectural interest to their homes.  They offer products, services and sourcing capabilities, and they host free workshops and seminars designed to inform, inspire and show people how to incorporate architectural treasures into their homes.

A Touch of Distinction, 816-931-9145. Company specializing in historic color consultations, renovations, stenciling and landscaping.  A former preservation architect for the Kansas City Landmarks Commission, owner Paul Helmer has given over 1200 consultations and has appeared on PBS and "If Walls Could Talk".  His beautiful multi-colored exteriors can be seen on homes and churches in Hyde Park, Coleman Highlands, Ward Parkway, Mission Hills and other cities in the metropolitan area. 

M.L. Herman & Company, 816-506-7746.  Restorer and remodeler Marion Herman helped restore a bungalow at 5320 Brookside Boulevard in 2005.

Affolter Installations, 816-363-1180 (home)/816-916-6603 (cell).  Owner Jim Affolter has done extensive carpentry, tile, foundation work, rehab and rebuild work, etc.

Chester White, 913-271-8991 (cell)/913-544-2894 (home).  Chester is a former set builder for the Missouri Rep, and now does extensive home carpentry and design work.

Habitat ReStore - great source for inexpensive, recycled building products and a great way to recycle your own cast-off renovation items - keep them out of the landfill!

Kansas City Home Weatherization Program, 816-513-3046/816-513-3039. Insulation program for low-income homeowners.

Metropolitan Energy Center, 816-835-7593, energy@kcenergy.org  Non-profit center that connects users to energy-saving strategies.  They are in the process of setting up a green and energy-efficient demonstration house adjacent to the Discovery Center at 4750 Troost Avenue.  You are also encouraged to check out the EnergyStar website.

Furnishings/Design Elements

Renditions Arts and Crafts Store, 522 Main, Weston, Missouri.  816-640-2300.  The best Arts and Crafts store in the area; they also offer fine design, stencilling and renovation services.

Traditions Furniture, 7400 W. 79th Street, Overland Park, Kansas.  913-649-2429.  Local dealer for craftsman-styled reproduction furniture by the Stickley Company.

D & R Furniture Company. Handmade, Amish-built furniture based on classic Frank Lloyd Wright designs offer superior comfort and reasonable prices.

Nick Carter and Company, 3410 Main Street, Kansas City, Missouri.  816-561-7655.  Dan Lopez has resurrected his former Westport store of original Arts and Crafts furniture in this new facility that also boasts modern pieces.  Dan is a walking encyclopedia on all things Arts and Crafts, and his collection boasts pieces by Stickley, Roycroft, and Rosewood, as well as others.
